Top 5 US Cities for Vehicle Thefts in 2023

Braden Rubrecht Blog

Protecting your vehicle from theft is a priority, no matter where you live. However, it’s essential in cities where vehicle thefts are more common. Looking at the most recent National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) Hot Spots and Hot Wheels report, we’ve put together a list of where in the US you can expect more theft.

According to the NICB, over 1 million vehicles were stolen in 2022, a 7 percent increase over 2021 and surpassing 1 million for the first time since 2008. That number amounted to an estimated worth of $8.9 billion in theft losses. California and Texas had the most reported stolen vehicles, and Illinois had the most significant increase, estimated at 35 percent between 2021 and 2022.

1. Bakersfield, California

Bakersfield ranks first at 1,023 – the total number of thefts per 100,000 residents. A combination of factors, including the city’s proximity to major highways, significant drug activity, and the availability of chop shops, has made it a hot spot for vehicle theft.

2. Denver, Colorado

Denver takes second place with 964 thefts per 100,000 residents. This includes the Aurora and Lakewood suburbs of Denver. And Colorado also became the state with the most car thefts. Its proximity to two major interstate highways makes it easy to get away

3. Pueblo, Colorado

Helping Colorado move up to the top State for car theft is Pueblo, Colorado, at 891 thefts per 100,000 residents— a substantial increase from the previous year of 602 thefts per 100k residents. Contributing factors include the city’s decreasing income rate and location near multiple state borders, facilitating the movement of stolen vehicles across state lines.

4. Albuquerque, New Mexico

With 710 thefts per 100,000 residents, Albuquerque is now third on the list of car thefts. Although dropping from last year’s 780, you still risk losing your ride. The primary reason for the high rate is the city’s strategic location, as it serves as a hub for interstate highways that lead to different parts of the country, making it easier for thieves to transport stolen vehicles.

5. Portland, Oregon

Portland wraps up the top 5 with 680 thefts per 100,000 residents. The city’s struggling economy, increasing crime, and proximity to the Canadian border make it an attractive target for vehicle thieves.
